Known for her work in commercial and independent cinema of Hindi and Tamil languages, her accolades include three Filmfare Awards and one Filmfare Awards South. She was appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund in 1999. In 2015, she was involved in the relief works after the earthquake in Nepal. A survivor of ovarian cancer herself, she active promotes spreading awareness about the disease.
