TJFF presents a rare opportunity to see the late Rob Reiner’s delightful and rarely-shown 1978 sitcom Free Country, a passion project he made right after All In the Family. Reiner stars as an 89-year-old Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant, recalling his younger self--also played by Reiner--on the Lower East Side at the turn of the last century. Though short-lived, the sitcom “deserves a footnote in the Rob Reiner filmography as the start of the multi-hyphenate artistry.” (Thomas Doherty, The Hollywood Reporter)

They speak about their work, their role in the community, and how they put solidarity into practice. Their inspiring stories offer a glimpse of a feminism that is not theoretical, but rooted in everyday life—a feminism that is truly practiced and lived.
In 1944 Germany invaded Hungary. Adam, a young Jewish-Hungarian boy was taken across the street to the house of his neighbours who agreed to hide him from the Nazis. He watched through the slats of the fence as his family was taken away. After being denounced and discovered he embarked on an incredible journey of survival. The film recounts Adam’s experiences, but also how these experiences have rippled through his family for generations, and how the process of making art—particularly comics—has allowed Adam to reimagine, grapple with, and heal from his childhood.
