Twelve-year-old Azamat spends his summer vacation in the village. After another prank by his grandson, his grandfather sends him to a high-mountain pasture. There, among the shepherds, the boy initially feels uncomfortable. His peers do not miss the opportunity to laugh at how Azamat herds the flock and cleans the pens. But soon, the boy begins to value the shepherds' attitude toward him and his friendship with a one-horned cow, with whom he often plays soccer.

Katy McLaughlin desires to work on her family's mountainside horse ranch, although her father insists she finish boarding school. Katy finds a mustang in the hills near her ranch.
