Loosely based on a tale by Russian master Ivan Turgenev, this finely calibrated drama mainly unfolds in the confines and surroundings of a countryside inn. A family from the big city, seeking a late-evening repast, are surprised to witness (and enjoy) a traditional form of vocal performance. A seemingly straightforward affair at first, it steadily discloses offbeat undercurrents, which gradually emerge and then fully flower in the transcendent finale.
