The source material came from the prosecution, who wanted to use it as a basis. The 120 hours of material from the broadcasts of various US television stations, which the officials of the Sacramento prosecutor's office had recorded (in poor picture and sound quality), were surprisingly made available to Lutz Dammbeck in 2002. However, there was no trial in 1998.

Following the release of The Godfather Part III in 1990, Coppola, Barry Malkin, and Walter Murch edited the three Godfather movies into chronological order. As had the earlier compilations, this film incorporated scenes that are not part of the theatrical releases.

Schoolteacher Bertram Cates is arrested for teaching his students Darwin's theory of evolution. The case receives national attention and one of the newspaper reporters, E.K. Hornbeck, arranges to bring in renowned defense attorney and atheist Henry Drummond to defend Cates. The prosecutor, Matthew Brady is a former presidential candidate, famous evangelist, and old adversary of Drummond.
