The film tells the story of a man who organizes the people to fight against the occupying forces. In the final years of the Ottoman Empire, the pashas in Anatolia oppress the people. They try to enrich themselves by collaborating with the occupying forces. One of them is Eftin Pasha. He collaborates with Greek General Mihail. With the sultan's decree, he provides unlimited assistance to the general and his soldiers. The general demands all of the villagers' crops and gold. He and his soldiers begin to exploit the people. Those who resist are thrown into prison and executed. Reşo and his brother Veysel, who are from the local community, refuse to give up all of their crops. They decide to organize the people against the pasha and the general.

France, 1940. In the first days of occupation, beautiful Lucile Angellier is trapped in a stifled existence with her controlling mother-in-law as they both await news of her husband: a prisoner of war. Parisian refugees start to pour into their small town, soon followed by a regiment of German soldiers who take up residence in the villagers' own homes. Lucile initially tries to ignore Bruno von Falk, the handsome and refined German officer staying with them. But soon, a powerful love draws them together and leads them into the tragedy of war.
