Born female, Nidal has identified as a boy since he was nine years old which coincided with their escape from Syria. As his body starts to mature, he is forced to navigate the complexity of his circumstances in the confines of a refugee camp and a culture that cannot comprehend gender fluidity.

His growing libido has gotten him banned from the women's baths, where his mother took him when he was younger, but he's not yet old enough to participate in grown-up discussions with the men of his Tunisian village. Noura's only real friend is a troublemaker named Salih -- the village political outcast.

A young refugee of the Sudanese Civil War who wins a lottery for relocation to the United States with three other lost boys. Encountering the modern world for the first time, they develop an unlikely friendship with a brash American woman assigned to help them, but the young man struggles to adjust to this new life and his feelings of guilt about the brother he left behind.
