The last few years have been no walk in the park for Richard Beller. The separation from his wife and the hard work at the architecture firm have taken a lot out of him. His relationship with his 14-year-old daughter Marie has also suffered enormously as a result. She blames him for her parents' separation. To make matters worse, his 78-year-old mother Hilde has also become a "problem" for some time now, showing undeniable signs of Alzheimer's disease. She is due to move into a retirement home this weekend. Now, of all times, the most important job of his life is in danger of being canceled due to a technical problem in the office.

Middle-aged widow Beatrice Hunsdorfer and her daughters Ruth and Matilda are struggling to survive in a society they barely understand. Beatrice dreams of opening an elegant tea room but does not have the wherewithal to achieve her lofty goal. Epileptic Ruth is a rebellious adolescent, while shy but highly intelligent and idealistic Matilda seeks solace in her pets and school projects, including one designed to show how small amounts of radium affect marigolds.
