Gianluca Sciortino is a child in the midst of the vitality of his ten years. On November 9, 1992, in Rome, Gianluca goes to school like every morning, enters class and suddenly feels ill. He is accompanied to the infirmary and after a few minutes he collapses and enters a coma due to the rupture of an angioma which caused a devastating cerebral hemorrhage. His mother Gerarda remains by his side, talking to him continuously, massaging and anointing his body to protect him from dehydration, attentive to every slight change in his condition.

A middle-aged man, Pietro, becomes a widower and must take care of his daughter. He will never have the time to delve into his own pain, committing himself to raising his daughter with love and dedication, in an all-encompassing relationship in which one heals the other's wounds through his own. When, after a few years, he tries to start a new life with a new partner, not everything will go as hoped: his daughter's reaction will be exaggerated and Pietro will be put to the test. He will find himself struggling between anger and paternal instinct.

Giacinto lives with his wife, their ten children and various other family members in a shack on the hills of Rome. Some time ago he has lost his left eye while at work, and got a consistent sum of money from the insurance company, which he keeps hidden from the rest of the family. His whole life is now based on defending the money he sees as his own, while the rest of the family tries to kill him.
