Antonia Wiedemann has built a new life for herself after the painful divorce from her husband Ludwig. In her animal boarding kennel in the countryside, she looks after everything that creeps and flies. Veterinarian Dr. Rafael Hansen even entrusts her with a jumping horse that its owner was about to take to the slaughterhouse. Antonia has a unique instinct for animals, but she prefers to avoid Rafael's cautious advances.

A fictional character, Rasmus Nielsen, travels around the country, first as a traveling teacher, later in other positions, and through his experiences we are introduced to the conditions of various population groups. The central figure in the portrayal of historical figures is the politician Orla Lehmann.
