It's Katie's (Lexi Lore) 18th birthday today, so the neighbor brought over some cupcakes. Michael (Derrick Pierce) tenses but plays it cool, telling him that his step-daughter is not feeling so well today. When Michael returns to Katie, who obediently and sensually licks the icing he scooped off the cupcake from his finger, it seems like he's anything but a good step-father. After looking for her friend Emma (Kay Carter), Lucy (Jojo Kiss) finally finds her having a perfectly friendly chat with Lucy's step-dad, Mr. Edwards (Dick Chibbles). Emma gushes that "I had no idea your step-dad's a policeman, Lucy, you never talk about him!" Lucy seems in a hurry to bring Emma back to her room, saying they should get back to studying.

Teen skater Ken Park (nicknamed Krap Nek; his name spelled and pronounced backward) kills himself at a Visalia skate park; his death bookends the lives of four other young people who knew him: Shawn, the most conventional; Tate brims with psychotic rage; Claude is habitually harassed by his brutish father and coddled, rather uncomfortably, by his enormously pregnant mother; and Peaches looks after her devoutly religious father, but yearns for freedom. They're all rather tight, or so they claim.

Fred arrives at the doorstep of his beautiful young mistress Velvet after four years apart, claiming to have finally left his wife. But when she rejects his attempts to rekindle their romance, his persistence evolves into obsession — and a dark history between the former lovers comes into focus.
