To earn money, Panos becomes a sailor and leaves behind his wife and children. However, the money is not enough, and his wife works here and there to make ends meet. The release of his lazy brother from prison will worsen the situation, as the latter will force his brother's wife to give him the money she earns. Panos' ship is missing and his wife falls ill, forcing their children to take to the streets to bring money home. The little girl loses her sight after an accident, and only her father's return can cure her, while sending her prodigal brother back to prison.
