Conflicts reach their boiling point during a mass protest. Law enforcement stationed at these demonstrations are made to work overtime; long hours away from their families have since become the norm. Police sergeant Ah-Wen, who is thrust into the heart of these clashes, struggles to find a balance between his already precarious marriage, and the high pressure and strenuous conditions of his working environment.

Ah-Ching and his friends have just finished school in their island fishing village, and now spend most of their time drinking and fighting. Three of them decide to go to the port city of Kaohsiung to look for work. They find an apartment through relatives, and Ah-Ching is attracted to the girlfriend of a neighbor. There they face the harsh realities of the big city.

Yu Hong leaves her home village and starts university in Beijing, where she develops a consuming and compulsive relationship with another student. The student riots from 1989 then ensue and take a toll on their lives.
